FRP Ladder specification
PART 1 ‑ GENERAL
1.1 SCOPE OF WORK
This specification is for an FRP ladder system for manholes in compliance with the Ontario Building Code
The publications listed below form part of this specification to the extent referenced herein. The publications are referred to within the text by the designation only.

1.3 CONTRACTOR SUBMITTALS
- The CONTRACTOR shall furnish Stamped and Sealed shop drawings by a Professional Engineer registered in The Province of Ontario of all fabricated ladders and accessories in accordance with the provisions of this Section.
- CONTRACTOR shall furnish Stamped and Sealed Ladder Calculations including analysis of stringers, rungs, brackets and bolts using the loads as specified in the Ontario Building Code.
- The CONTRACTOR may be required to submit sample pieces of each item specified herein for acceptance by the ENGINEER as to quality and color. Sample pieces are manufactured by the method to be used in the WORK.
1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE
- Manufacturer shall offer a 3 year limited warranty on all FRP products against defects in materials and workmanship.
- Manufacturer shall submit an Inspection Test Plan for approval to the engineer
1.5 PRODUCT DELIVERY AND STORAGE
- Delivery of Materials: Manufactured materials will deliver in original, unbroken pallets, packages, containers, or bundles bearing the label of the manufacturer. Adhesives, resins and their catalysts and hardeners are crated or boxed separately and noted as such to facilitate their movement to a dry indoor storage facility.
- Storage of Products: All materials are carefully handled to prevent them from abrasion, cracking, chipping, twisting, other deformations, and other types of damage. Adhesives, resins and their catalysts are stored in dry indoor storage facilities until they are required.
PART 2 – PRODUCTS
FRP Ladders shall be FRP Access Ladders® as manufactured by

- All ladder side rails, rungs, ladder mounting brackets are to be FRP structural shapes manufactured by the pultrusion process. Wall Brackets are of FRP Molded Construction using the hand layup process in accordance to CAN/CGSB 41.22-93 or shall be constructed out of 316 Stainless Steel.
- Resins are isophthalic polyester with chemical formulation necessary to provide the corrosion resistance, strength and other physical properties as required.
- All finished surfaces of FRP items and fabrications shall be smooth, resin‑rich, free of voids and without dry spots, cracks, crazes or unreinforced areas. glass fibers shall be well covered with resin to protect against their exposure due to wear or weathering.
- All FRP products shall have a tested flame spread rating of 25 or less per ASTM E‑84 Tunnel Test.
- The ladder side rail shall be square tube with a wall thickness of 1/4″ or greater. The rungs are pultruded structural shapes, continuously fluted to provide a non-slip surface. Rungs that are gritted as a secondary operation shall not be permitted.
- All rungs are mechanically attached to the ladder with FRP dowels and chemically bonded with Methyl Methacrylate or Poly Urethane Adhesive. Riveted connections shall not be permitted.
- All ladder and cage components are to be integrally pigmented yellow. Wall and floor mount brackets shall be gray if pultruded or clear if hand lay up.
- All metal fasteners and components shall be 316 SS without exception.
- Anchor Bolts Shall be 316 SS Hilti Kwik Bolts or an ENGINEER approved alternate

PART 3 – EXECUTION
- All ladders and cages are design and laid out in strict accordance with the Ontario Building Code
- All rungs will penetrate the wall of the tube side rails and will connect to the rails with both epoxy and rivets or rods to provide both a chemical and mechanical lock, respectively.
- Ladders are fully shop assembled.
- All cut or machined edges, holes and notches will sealed to provide maximum corrosion resistance. All field fabricated cuts will coated similarly by the contractor in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
4.0 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
- The completed ladder and cage system installation shall meet the load requirements as set forth in the Ontario Building Code.
- The contractor will required to install the ladder in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s assembly drawing and installation manual.
- Follow manufacturer’s MSDS sheets when cutting or drilling fiberglass products or using resin products; provide adequate ventilation.
